Abdominal Pain At Midnight And During Bowel Movements?
Good evening Doctor. I want to ask you about my husband’s stomach health. So this is the third incident he has experienced, my husband is 42 years old … He feels that when he stays in the middle of the night he feels like eating wrong, when he wants to defecate, it hurts so much he fainted … I was afraid that he was on duty out of town and he was alone in the hotel. If he collapsed, how would anyone know? And that only happens at midnight when you have an upset stomach. It’s very rare but dangerous … Thank you very much, God bless
Hello, thank you for the question to HealthReplies.com
Basically, abdominal pain and strong bowel movements (including when there is abdominal pain when going to defecate), can trigger the activation of the vagal response. The vagal response is an automatic response from the body that arises because of stimulation of the vagus nerve. When the vagus nerve is stimulated, symptoms such as:
a cold sweat
feel like you're going to pass out until you actually pass out
feeling cold all over the body
tinutus or ringing in the ears
the skin becomes cold and pale
This condition is actually not dangerous and the symptoms will also subside by themselves in a few minutes. However, if fainting occurs before your husband has a chance to hold on or occurs while standing, then the injury caused during this fall can be dangerous.
To prevent fainting and falling when a vagal response arises during bowel movements, your husband can position his head lower when sitting on the toilet (leaning his head toward the knee or lower than the knee). This will help keep the blood flow going well to the brain and prevent fainting during bowel movements. If possible, get down from the toilet immediately and lie down with your feet raised to a higher position.
The thing that needs to be further discovered is the cause of abdominal pain experienced by your husband. Try to find triggers for abdominal pain (for example, did your husband eat spicy food before, eat poorly-cleaned food, eat something that causes allergies, or just take certain medications such as laxatives, etc.). If you really cannot find the cause of your abdominal pain, you should take your husband to see a doctor so that further evaluation can be done on your husband's condition.
So much information from me, hopefully enough answer
