Bad Smell In The Ears Of A 3 Month Old Child?
good afternoon hello doctor, rnrnsy have a 3 month old baby, yesterday I accidentally smelled a bad smell from my child’s right and left ear then I cleaned it using a cotton bud, and there was a white yellow black lump of dirt, The next day I tried to clean it again and there was liquid inside that stuck to the cotton bud and it still smelled. is it dangerous and what should i do? does it need to be taken to an ENT doctor? My child’s body temperature is normal, he doesn’t have a fever, but he still looks cold and has several coughs. please let me know thank you
Hi Lawra.. Thank you for the questions given.
Children are more susceptible to ear infections, especially children under 3 years of age. This happens because the child's immune system is not yet perfect so it is susceptible to infection, also because in children the channel that connects the nose and ear is more flat so that if the child has a cold or flu, bacteria will be trapped in the middle ear, resulting in easy infection.
From the description of the complaints you described above, your child's complaints can be caused by an infection in the ear (otitis media). Symptoms that often appear are: fever, the child becomes fussy, discharge from the ear, the fluid can be yellowish and smelly. With the child's immune system, in 2-3 days the complaints can be reduced, but if after that there is no improvement then it is better for you to have your child checked by an ENT doctor. The doctor will carry out a physical examination directly so that the diagnosis can be made and appropriate treatment can be given.
In the meantime what you can do:
Avoid picking the child's ear to prevent further infection Avoid getting water in the ear Avoid giving ear drops without a doctor's advice If the child is fussy and looks sick then you can give paracetamol according to the dose and age of the child Hopefully this is useful
