Can Asthma Be Cured?
Good afternoon. I want to ask whether if someone with asthma can be cured? Do you have to undergo surgery to get well? So that the lungs don’t narrow again?
Hello, Thank you for the question.
Asthma is a condition of long-lasting / chronic inflammation of the respiratory tract that causes narrowing of the respiratory tract so that sufferers experience complaints of shortness of breath. In addition to inflammation, the respiratory tract of patients also generally becomes more sensitive which causes an increase in mucus production / phlegm which then worsens the narrowing of the respiratory tract. In addition to shortness of breath, sufferers can also experience symptoms of cough, chest pain, and wheezing. The cause of asthma is not known with certainty however, asthma is often triggered by exposure to dust, animal hair, pollen, cigarette smoke, physical activity, cold air, and infection.
Someone who is proven to have asthma from a doctor's examination will be treated with drugs that aim to control symptoms and prevent recurrence because asthma cannot be cured. Types of drugs and other treatments recommended by doctors depend on the condition of each patient. In addition to treatment, sufferers are also advised to avoid triggers that can cause asthma symptoms, as mentioned above. Vaccination against influenza and pneumonia on a regular basis is also recommended to prevent recurrence of asthma due to both infections. Surgery is not the main treatment of asthma. Surgery is the last action that will be recommended by doctors in patients with severe asthma that is not controlled by drugs.
If you have asthma, please consult with a lung specialist for further examination and treatment. You are also advised to regularly control with your doctor to make sure your asthma symptoms are well controlled.
Hopefully this information is useful.
