Can Bipolar Disorder Be Completely Cured?
Assallamualaikum, I want to ask. I was sentenced to have bipolar disorder since a year ago. And all the treatments I have taken. Can I recover completely and not take any more drugs?
Basically, any form of psychological disorders, both mild and severe, do not use the term 'cured' or 'totally cured'. The term used is 'controlled'. Why is that, because psychological disorders can re-emerge at any time if certain triggers occur, even though someone may have been symptom free for years. For example, someone with anxiety disorder has been symptom free for 20 years. If at any time the person experiences a trigger, then the symptoms of anxiety disorders can suddenly reappear. That is why, the term cured is not used.
However, you do not need to be discouraged, because if your psychological condition is always in control, then you can be free of symptoms for years. Not all types of psychological disorders must be overcome by taking medication for life. If the psychiatrist assesses someone is stable, then that person may not need to take any more drugs. However, consultation or counseling should continue to be carried out routinely. This is done so that the psychiatrist or psychologist can monitor the development of the condition and detect it early if one day symptoms occur again. So that, depending on your condition, then you can be controlled and no longer need medication, but try to do consultations routinely. You will also be trained to know what triggers you should avoid so that symptoms do not appear, and what to do if you feel the symptoms start returning.
Thus my explanation, hopefully can be understood. Regards.
