Can Blood Phobias Occur In Adulthood?
I didn’t get a phobia of blood when I was small, and recently my hands were pierced by needles, bleeding quite a lot. I panicked a little, after that my breath was tight and my vision was blurry as if I wanted to pass out. Can blood phobia occur when I am an adult when I was not young?
Hello, thank you for the question to HealthReplies.com
First of all, you need to differentiate between blood phobias and vasovagal reflexes because of seeing blood. In people who have blood phobias, that person will feel excessive fear when he sees any type of blood or certain substances that look like blood. People who experience blood phobias may experience excessive anxiety, experience panic attacks, may experience vasovagal reflexes when viewing blood, or may not.
Vasovagal reflex is the body's response that occurs due to stimulation of the vagus nerve. This vagus nerve can be stimulated because of many things such as emotional stress, excessive fear, gastrointestinal disease, straining during bowel movements, excessive heat, excessive pain, standing for too long, etc., including seeing blood coming out of the body itself (pricked) needle or blood taken for laboratory examination). Vasovagal reflexes do not have to always occur in the above situations.
The symptoms that you experience are actually more directed to the symptoms of a vasovagal reflex. This vasovagal reflex can occur anywhere and anytime with the triggers mentioned above / Occurrence of vasovagal reflexes although it is very unpleasant, but actually not too dangerous. If you start to feel the initial symptoms of stimulation of your vagus nerve (dizziness, lightheadedness, buzzing ears, impaired vision, cold sweat, nausea) you should immediately sit or hold to avoid falling or lying down and raise your legs in a position higher than heart if the conditions are possible. If you can only find a sitting position, hold on and bow so that blood flow to the brain remains smooth and you do not experience fainting.
So much information from me, hopefully enough answer
