Pain during menstruation is called dysmenorrhea. Generally menstrual pain is a normal thing to happen when symptoms are felt just before menstruation and continue on the first day until the third menstruation. The cause is an increase in prostaglandin levels which increases the contraction of the muscles of the uterus during menstruation.


Mefenamic acid is an anti-inflammatory drug that can be used to relieve inflammation and pain with mild to moderate intensity. The way it works is by inhibiting the formation of enzymes that play a role in the process of prostaglandin formation. Mefenamic acid is classified as a hard drug so its use must be based on prescribing and supervision by a doctor who treats patients directly.


It is not recommended to use mefenamic acid without first consulting directly with a doctor. The use of mefenamic acid arbitrarily and in the long run risks causing side effects, including heartburn, nausea, heartburn / burning sensation in the chest, gastrointestinal bleeding with symptoms of black vomiting or bloody bowel movements with fresh black / red color, to an increased risk heart problems (heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, and blood clotting disorders) and liver damage.
