In the afternoon, doctor, I want to ask. My father was new to the tracheostomy, so for approximately 5 days his breathing was using cannula and kanul children. But my father does not like to use his cannons so they are often released because if they are used, they are short of breath. Is it okay if you only use cannula covered with wet gauze without a child installed? Please explain doctor. Thank you.

Hi,

Thank you for the question.

Tracheostomy is a hole made in the front of the neck to penetrate directly into the trachea, which is then held using a special tube (tracheotomy tube) so that this hole remains open so that it makes it easy to breathe. Surgery to make a hole is called a tracheotomy. This action can be done for a variety of purposes, for example in people who need respiratory assistance with a ventilator, people who have airway obstruction or narrowing (such as throat cancer), people with certain neurological disorders that make it difficult to expel phlegm from their airways, people undergoing surgery on the head or neck, sufferers of head or neck injuries that cause airway obstruction, and so on.

In a traceostomy tube, there are 2 cannulas (tubes), namely the outer and inner cannula (which are often called cannula children). This outer cannula serves to keep the tracheostomy hole open. In the outer cannula there is also a hole that can be fastened with adhesive so that the tracheostomy tube does not shift from its place. Meanwhile, the function of the cannula is also important to facilitate the process of cleansing phlegm that has accumulated in the tracheostomy tube.

Given the importance of the function of the two cannulas in this tracheostomy tube, it is not recommended to remove one, let alone both. The good, if your father feels uncomfortable or tightness when using a tracheostomy tube, consult further with the doctor or surgeon who treats him to find out the cause of the tightness and given the best treatment.

Hope this helps ...
