Can Pneumonia Recur? And What To Do With Heart Disease?

Hello, my mother has a history of pneumonia and has finished undergoing outpatient treatment for 6 months. But now continue undergoing pathway heart disease / {Cardiomegaly, sugesif accompanied by lung dam} (X-ray results). In the morning my mother was in pain in the right chest (feels like a prick) and shortness of breath. Is this the effect of recurrence from pneumonia? and what is the initial action for pain relief ?. Thank you

Hello Novianti, thank you for asking to HealthReplies.com.

Let me introduce myself, Dr. Rio will answer your question.

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that affects the air pockets / alveoli. These bags can be filled with fluid or pus so that sufferers will experience shortness of breath. The cause of pneumonia itself there are many such as bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. Treatment also depends on the cause itself. Based on the story that you told your mother has finished undergoing lung treatment which means that the infection that causes abnormalities in your mother has disappeared or healed. Penumonia can not recur again if it has been handled correctly, but recurrent infections can occur causing the same disease.

But it's different in your mother's case, complaints of shortness of breath / shortness of breath accompanied by discomfort in the right chest caused by abnormalities in your mother's heart that can be seen from the x-ray picture of cardiomegaly with lung dam. Cardiomegaly itself is an enlargement of the heart muscle due to a particular disease, for example hypertension, coronary heart disease, heart valve abnormalities, infections, etc. Cardiomegaly can be permanent or temporary depending on the cause itself.

In your mother, my suspicion is a buildup of fluid in the lungs, or a reduction in oxygen supply to the lungs due to the disruption of your mother's heart muscle, so that it can be dangerous if not handled properly. Your mother's pneumonia can make the condition of your mother's heart disease worse now, but since pneumonia has finished treatment, the shortness of breath is purely due to abnormalities in her nose. You can take your mother to the hospital for further treatment.

Right now what you can do is:

Evaluate your mother's condition, find the cause of cardiomegaly in your mother, and overcome. Avoid excessive fluid intake because it can aggravate the work of the heart. Evaluate other complaints such as fever, or cough and report to the doctor at the hospital if available. That's all the answers I can give, thank you very much :)
