Can The Best Category 4 Disease Be Cured?
I want to ask, can category 4’s best’s disease be cured ??
Hello Samantha Devi,
Best disease is another name for viteliform macular degeneration. The macula is the part of the retina (the back layer of the eyeball that functions like a screen that captures the shadow of the object seen) that functions in central vision such as when reading, watching tv, and writing. Best disease is a genetic disorder, due to gene abnormalities on chromosome 11.
Changes to the macules of the best disease patients begin at age 3-15 years. In the early stages there are no symptoms and there are no significant changes in the macula. At stage 4, there has been a change in the macula and usually patients have vision problems such as seeing straight lines such as wavy and difficulty reading small writing.
The diagnosis of best disease is through clinical symptoms and examination of the retina by an ophthalmologist. Until now there has been no treatment for Best disease. Several studies are developing genetic therapy and also injecting certain materials such as anti-vegf and laser therapy to prevent the formation of new blood vessels in the retina thereby slowing down vision loss in the case of Best disease. Generally sufferers can move normally, reading until the age of 40-50 years. Worsening of vision can occur afterwards. Regular eye examinations need to be done to monitor the progression of the disease.
Thus the explanation from me, may be useful.
