I want to ask, I am a hypokalemic patient with a lack of potassium, what is the actual cause, how come my potassium is suddenly low and what are the signs because right now I feel heavy in both legs when I pick up the pain

1 Answer:

Hi Niytha. In general, hypokalemia is a condition of a deficiency of an electrolyte called potassium in the blood. This condition is generally caused by:

1. the use of certain drugs, especially diuretics (to remove excess fluid in the body)

2. Presence of severe diarrhea, vomiting

3. Long-term alcohol use

4. Deficiency of folic acid

5. Presence of certain conditions such as primary aldosteronism, diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney failure

6. Use of certain antibiotics, use of laxatives or long-term laxatives

Consult with your doctor about the condition you are experiencing for treatment and further information. In general, the symptoms themselves are based more on the cause, although the symptoms of electrolyte disturbances can affect the muscles, such as weakness, pain or muscle cramps, especially in cases of severe hypokalemia, palpitations, impaired consciousness, especially in severe cases.

Further tests can help, especially checking blood electrolytes. Things you can do include consuming foods high in potassium such as bananas, potatoes, sweet potatoes, yogurt, salmon, avocados. Eating foods high in folate in lean meats, liver, green vegetables, fish, eggs, dairy products can help

This is about hypokalemia. Specific treatment by addressing the underlying cause is important. Hopefully helpful, and thank you. Greetings, Dr. Alyssa
