I want to ask..?rnOn 4 February 18 yesterday I gave birth to my 2nd child with a weight of 3.2 gr. 37 weeks gestational age. After the baby was born, the sclera of his eyes was still pure white. But after giving birth my breast milk has not come out but I continue to give it to stimulate milk production for 2 days. Because I want to give exclusive breastfeeding, I don’t give formula milk to my child. And as far as I know, babies can not drink for 3 days. For 2 days my son didn’t drink breast milk at all.. but I noticed how come the sclera of his eyes is slowly turning yellow and one of his eyes keeps getting runny? Why is that? Is it necessary to give oxytetracycline eye ointment -1%? X’s sclera is not as bright as after giving birth, and until now? Why is that? what should I do? does it need to be dried? But the normal body skin is not yellow.

Hello Ones, thanks for the question on

Your consultation question regarding your baby's sclera is yellow. This condition in medical language is called "icterus". Jaundice is a condition where there is a yellow discoloration that appears on the sclera and skin caused by a buildup of bilirubin in the blood. This jaundice will initially be seen in the sclera of the eyes and face, then will spread from the head to the chest, abdomen, hands and feet.

Jaundice in infants can be caused by:

Lack of breast milk intake. This jaundice will appear on the second or third day due to insufficient breast milk intake due to insufficient milk production on the first day.

Shorter erythrocyte life span

Bacterial infection or infection during pregnancy

Blood disorders

liver disease

Mother has diabetes

Because there are still several possibilities that can happen to your baby, it is advisable to immediately consult a pediatrician so that further examination and appropriate treatment can be carried out. Some of the efforts you can do at home, such as:

Immediately give breast milk as much as 8-12x every 24 hours.

Avoid applying eye medication

Avoid drying the baby in the sun

Hopefully this explanation can answer your question
