Hello doctor, I have a grandmother who is around 90 years old and her eyes have cataracts. My question is, can it still be operated on?

1 Answer:

Hello, thanks for the question.

Cataract is a disease of the eye where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy. This disease is most commonly experienced by older people, called senile cataracts, but can also occur in young adults and children. Some symptoms that can be experienced include:

Fogging and blurred vision Often feels dazzled or sensitive when seeing light Less clear seeing at night See halos around a light source. Double vision This cataract is usually treated by a surgical method. Cataract surgery is a method of surgery to replace a cloudy eyepiece with an artificial eyepiece. These artificial eye lenses can generally be used for life. This lens can be made of plastic or silicone, and can be used for a lifetime. Cataract surgery procedures in elderly people need to be considered also in terms of patient health, where in elderly patients usually already have a complex systemic disease and risk when performed surgery, for example, people with uncontrolled high blood sugar , high blood pressure, eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, etc. surgeries are usually not performed or postponed until the disease has improved. In elderly people who have experienced abnormalities in the eye, for example macular degeneration, after cataract surgery vision will usually remain blurred because the interference is not only from the eye lens. Therefore, we recommend to consult your ophthalmologist for an examination first, such as visual or sharp vision, slit lamp, funduscopy, vital sign examination, laboratory, etc. to find out the eye condition and overall health condition. This cataract cannot be corrected with eye drops or any herbal medicine, so far the right treatment method for cataract is surgery. Therefore, you should avoid using herbal medicines or anything that is dripped in the eye without a doctor's prescription and should keep eating healthy and nutritious foods.

so, hopefully it helps.
