Hi aayolanda,

Thank you for asking HealthReplies.com.

When the pregnancy is more than 20 weeks old, the larger the size of the pregnancy can cause pressure to the chest so that it creates discomfort. Generally, the discomfort that arises is in the form of tightness, but it is not uncommon for pregnant women to complain of pain like being pricked.

Pain around the chest during pregnancy, especially when breathing in and sleeping on your back, may occur due to GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), which is the back up of stomach acid into the esophagus. The cause of this condition is the malfunction of the valve that should line the esophagus with the stomach (lower esophageal sphincter). In addition to pain, GERD can also cause sufferers to feel tight, hot, lumpy, throat phlegm, and so on. Complaints can worsen when sleeping on your back due to the influence of gravity which pushes the stomach heavier.

In addition to GERD, your complaints can also arise due to other reasons, for example:

Bronchitis (inflammation of the airways leading to the lungs)
Myalgia (muscle pain)
Gastritis (inflammation of the gastric mucosa)
Costochondritis (inflammation of the ribs and surrounding joints)
stomach ulcer
Pleurisy (inflammation of the lining covering the lungs), and so on

Given that the complaint has been going on for a long time, you should immediately consult a gynecologist. Through a physical examination and ultrasound the doctor can determine the right treatment.

At this time, you can first compress the painful chest area using warm water. Make it a habit to give yourself a break of 2 to 3 hours after eating before you go to bed. You can also use a higher pillow while sleeping to reduce the pressure on your chest. Eat regularly, little by little but often. Reduce foods that are too spicy, sour, and coconut milk. Avoid smoking or consuming alcohol.

Hope it helps ya..
