sorry I want to ask. I have been coughing for almost 4 months. The first time I coughed in November 2017, I had been to the health center for treatment but it didn’t get better either. The doctor on duty said that I was diagnosed with TB. the cough is not phlegm but there is mucus in the throat which can be uncomfortable. which keeps me spitting. I don’t smoke, and I don’t cough up blood. But I find it difficult to swallow, but when I swallow it doesn’t hurt. Normal weight. Not decreased, normal appetite. Please guess I have a cough or something. Do I have cancer?

Hi Digimon998,

Thank you for asking HealthReplies.com.

A cough that does not go away for months can indeed be a sign of a Tuberculosis (TB) infection. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2016, Indonesia was ranked the 2nd most cases of tuberculosis in the world after India. This disease is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis which can be easily transmitted from sufferers to others through splashes of mucus from the respiratory tract that are inhaled, for example when the patient coughs, sneezes, or spits carelessly.

Often, TB that infects the lungs is confused with a common respiratory infection because the symptoms tend to be mild. But in fact, if not treated properly, pulmonary TB can spread to other organ systems and become increasingly difficult to cure, even potentially causing death.

Given the high incidence rate in Indonesia, it is strongly recommended that anyone with a cough for more than 2 weeks get tested for TB detection. This test is carried out through sputum examination, X-rays, and/or laboratories. This test is also needed to distinguish the symptoms of TB which are often similar to the symptoms of other diseases, for example:

Chronic bronchitis GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) Chronic gastritis Pneumonia Lung cancer Tonsillopharyngitis Congestive heart failure, etc. Clinically, TB symptoms can be characterized by chronic cough (can be a lot of or little phlegm), sometimes accompanied by bloody sputum, weakness, easy fatigue, decreased weight loss, decreased appetite, swollen lymph nodes (usually in the neck or armpit), chest pain, to shortness of breath. However, as mentioned above, often the symptoms of TB infection are not always typical, unless it has reached a fairly severe stage.

Who knows, is it true that the condition you are experiencing is caused by TB or not necessarily the doctor who examines you directly. Therefore, it needs to be clarified, what examinations did you undergo so that you were diagnosed with TB?

You should consult directly with your doctor. If it is true that what you are experiencing is pulmonary TB, then the treatment can be given through the administration of a combination of OAT antibiotics (anti-TB drugs) given for at least 6 months.

At this time, you should avoid all triggers that often trigger coughs, such as cold, dust mites, pollution, oily foods, artificial sweeteners, and so on. Use a mask to prevent the entry of harmful foreign particles into the respiratory tract. Also avoid coughing, sneezing, or spitting carelessly to minimize the risk of transmission. Always keep yourself and the environment where you live clean. Drink lots of warm water, and eat foods rich in calories and protein to increase your immune system. Don't forget, stop smoking and be diligent in exercising.

Hope it helps ya..
