Definition Of Post-polio Syndrome?
What is post polio paralysis?
Hello, Thank you for the question.
Polio / poliomyelitis is an infection of the polio virus that attacks the nervous system, especially patients who have not received the polio vaccine. This disease is not uncommon difficult to detect because it does not cause symptoms or if symptoms appear, the symptoms are not very clear / only a few. The disease is divided into three types, namely non-paralysis polio, polio paralysis, and post-polio syndrome (post-portfolio syndrome). Post-polio paralysis you mean is included in the post-polio syndrome. This syndrome occurs in people aged 30 to 40 years who previously suffered from polio. Symptoms experienced by these sufferers are:
muscle and joint weakness gradually and pain in the muscles and joints easily tired even with minimal physical activity reduced muscle mass difficulty breathing or difficulty swallowing sleep disorders accompanied by difficulty breathing difficult to withstand cold temperatures Most people feel these symptoms slowly and progressively. The cause of post polio syndrome is not known with certainty. The risk of developing this syndrome is greater if you have had a fairly severe polio infection beforehand, when you were a teenager or an adult when you were infected, and had a long healing period when you were previously infected. Treatment recommended by doctors is intended to treat symptoms experienced by patients which can be pain relievers, physiotherapy, speech therapy, or medications to treat sleep disorders.
If you experience the above mentioned complaints, please consult your neurologist immediately for further examination. Doctors need to do further tests such as blood tests, EMG, muscle biopsy, and others to look for other causes of the complaint. Treatment will be given by a doctor according to your condition.
Hopefully this information is useful.
