Differences Between Psychosomatic And Somatoform Disorders?
what is the difference between somatoform and psychosomatic
Hello Alvin Dirgan, thank you for the question for HealthReplies.com
Psychosomatic are physical complaints that arise or are exacerbated by psychological conditions. In psychosomatics, there is evidence of physical problems from the results of medical examinations. For example, someone who has a peptic ulcer (injury to the stomach or duodenum) can have more severe symptoms when the person is stressed, or someone with high blood pressure may experience blood pressure that does not drop with medication while under stress.
Somatoform disorder is a form of mental disorder in which the sufferer complains of subjective physical symptoms, without finding a clear physical illness. There are 5 forms of somatoform disorders:
somatization disorder, which is when a person complains of various types of different and unrelated physical symptoms at the same time, for example headache, abdominal pain, back pain, leg pain, eye pain.
hypochondriasis, which is when a person experiences excessive fear that the physical symptoms they experience are caused by a serious illness, for example, stomach pain is caused by stomach cancer, headaches are caused by brain cancer, etc.
conversion disorder, which is when a person complains of neurological-related symptoms without being accompanied by a proven neurological disorder from a medical examination, for example experiencing sudden blindness, being unable to walk suddenly, etc.
body dysmorphic disorder, which is when a person feels that there is something defective or imperfect in their body shape that is not seen by others, for example a person feels that their nose is tilted to the left, their eyebrows are drooping, etc.
pain disorder, which is when a person feels continuous pain in certain areas of the body without getting certain physical diseases that are found on a medical examination.
