Thank you for the question.
Earwax is basically a form of our body's natural defenses that is responsible for cleaning, lubricating, and protecting our ear canal by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and dirt that enter the ear. Under normal conditions, earwax does not need to be cleaned and will not cause interference. However, in certain conditions the dirt can not get out of the ear canal and actually settles in the ear, causing blockage or often called cerumen prop. This can occur if excessive earwax production, hard and dry stools, the habit of inserting foreign objects such as cotton buds orear plugs, narrow and hairy channels, and increasing age so that dirt tends to be drier.
Serumen prop can cause symptoms such as ear pain, itching, dizziness, or hearing loss. Dirt can be removed by cleaning it using special tools such as those available in ENT specialists. However, if the dirt is too hard and clot making it difficult to clean, the serumen prop will turn into serumen obturans, and the doctor will prescribe a liquid to soften the stool. This liquid can contain hydrogen peroxide which can soften the dirt so that the dirt will come out by itself. But this requires a process, namely by dripping it 2-3 times a day for 3-7 days. You can still feel discomfort such as pain, but slowly the dirt will soften and can be removed.
During the treatment period, the following recommendations can be made:
Take pain relievers that can be bought freely such as paracetamol. Do not insert any instrument into the ear like a cotton bud. Avoid putting water into the ear, avoid swimming for a while. Hope it helps and hopefully get well soon.
