Good morning, I want to ask Efavirenz drugs can be taken by people who are not infected with HIV or not? Are people who take Efavirenz positive for HIV? Efavirenz is actually for what and for whom? Can healthy people drink it?
Hello Ade Supriyadi,
Efavirenz is an NNRTI (non-nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor) class of antiretroviral drugs used in HIV / AIDS therapy by reducing the amount of virus in the body so that the body's immune system can work better. Efavirenz is also used as a post-exposure prophylactic therapy (such as accidentally being pricked by a patient's syringe) to prevent patients at high risk from becoming infected with HIV. HIV / AIDS therapy uses a combination of regimens (other than Efavirenz) that are specifically prescribed by doctors and cannot be taken carelessly.
During antiretroviral drug therapy, patients will be monitored for viral and CD4 cell counts to assess the patient's response to treatment. CD4 cell count examination will be carried out every 3-6 months. While HIV RNA tests are carried out since the beginning of treatment, which is then continued every 3-4 months during treatment. In addition, it is important for patients to take ARVs according to doctor's instructions. Missing a drug dose or even dropping out of treatment will make the HIV virus grow faster and make the patient's condition deteriorate rapidly.
Efavirenz is a drug obtained from a doctor's prescription, only the doctor can determine who can take the drug with special indications. Healthy people without indications are not allowed to take this drug because of the many side effects that can be caused include:
Mental disorders: excessive sadness, anxiety, auditory or visual hallucinations, suicidal ideas
Impaired liver function: yellow skin, yellow eyes, brown color like tea, nausea, itching all over the body
Rashes on the skin
Whereas in patients with HIV / AIDS or high-risk patients exposed to HIV the administration of this drug is far more beneficial than the side effects above. Thus the explanation from me, hopefully useful.
