Hello Windasari, thank you for your question
Almost every woman must have experienced abdominal pain during menstruation or dysmenorrhea. Menstrual pain can be mild to severe, so not all women feel bothered by this condition.
Normally, menstrual pain occurs in the first few days of menstruation and subsides as this natural cycle ends. Pain, especially in the lower abdomen, is the body's response to shedding of the uterine wall during menstruation. The muscles of the uterus will increase their contractions which aim to compress the blood vessels, causing a lack of oxygen and the release of chemicals that trigger pain. Not infrequently during dysmenorrhea, it is also accompanied by symptoms of diarrhea, nausea, weakness, and headaches. No need to worry, dysmenorrhea is generally not dangerous. Over-the-counter pain medications such as paracetamol will relieve the pain that arises.
In addition to the normal dysmenorrhea above, there is also dysmenorrhea associated with certain medical conditions, such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammation, adenomyositis, uterine myoma, or as a side effect of using intrauterine devices (IUD). This condition is known as secondary dysmenorrhea, in which the symptoms of menstrual pain start earlier and last longer, pain can even persist even after menstruation has ended, and is accompanied by additional symptoms, such as irregular menstruation or vaginal discharge. Secondary dysmenorrhea is classified as an abnormal condition and requires additional medical treatment so that if you experience symptoms, it is recommended to consult directly to a gynecologist for further examination.
