Thank you for the question given to HealthReplies.com
Fluid buildup in the lungs or pulmonary edema is a condition where extravascular fluid accumulation occurs in the lungs. This condition can be caused by two conditions, namely an increase in fluid filtration pressure or barrier damage which normally keeps the fluid and protein in the blood vessels. The first condition, namely the increase in fluid filtration pressure is usually caused by an increase in pulmonary capillary hydrostatic pressure due to left heart failure. Impaired function in the left heart causes the heart to be unable to pump blood throughout the body as a result fluid builds up in the left heart and then moves backward until it builds up in the lungs. The second condition, namely damage to the capillary-alveolar barrier which normally works to keep fluids and proteins in the capillaries. Damage to this barrier causes fluid to exit the capillary into the alveoli followed by the release of protein, wherein this protein serves to maintain the oncotic pressure of the capillaries to remain normal. This causes accumulation of fluid in the lungs.
Someone with pulmonary edema usually experience symptoms such as tightness and difficulty lying down without using a pillow more than 1. We suggest your wife should avoid strenuous activities because it can aggravate the symptoms of tightness. Sports should be light like walking but without imposing your wife's condition. Your wife should reduce excessive fluid consumption because it can aggravate your wife's condition.
So, hopefully useful.
