Hello Cecee, Thank you for the question.
Breast milk can meet the nutritional needs during the first 6 months of a baby's life because basically, the baby does not need additional nutrients other than breast milk. Therefore, during the first 6 months, mothers are encouraged to breastfeed exclusively with breast milk, or in other words only breast milk without other drinks. If you give other drinks besides breast milk, for example formula milk, then you cannot be said to be giving milk exclusively.
After the baby reaches 6 months, breast milk can not meet the nutritional needs of infants. Therefore, complementary food is needed (MPASI) to meet nutrients that cannot be obtained from breast milk. The principle of giving MPASI is to introduce babies to a gradual variation in food. The purpose here is to introduce food variations one at a time and with the consistency of food that is slowly being improved, from liquid, soft, then solid, so that the child can finally get used to consuming family food.
To start MPASI, you can give one type of MPASI first, for example fruit or vegetable puree (crushed fruit or vegetable). In pulverizing the fruit or vegetable, you can mix it with breast milk so that the puree of the fruit or vegetable is easier for the baby to digest. At the age of 6 months, you can start giving MPASI 2-3 tablespoons, 2-3 times a day. If your baby is not interested, you can try it some time later or a few days later. You do not need to worry if the baby does not want to consume MPASI at this time because MPASI is still a complementary food, not a main food. If the baby wants to consume MPASI, wait 3 days before giving other types of MPASI. The aim is to find out whether the baby has an allergic reaction from the administration of the MPASI. You can also give water in between breastfeeding so that the baby is easier to swallow.
You can increase the portion of feeding and frequency of feeding gradually. If the baby is used to 2-3 tablespoons, you can increase it to half a bowl (which is 250 mL) for example. In addition, food consistency can also be increased to coarse filter foods. If you are used to eating soft foods, you can introduce finger food to your child, for example pieces of fruit that are cut into the size of a finger (banana or avocado). The next stage, if the baby can consume soft food and finger food, then the baby is ready with advanced food. At this stage, you can introduce meat (red meat and chicken meat), seafood such as fish, rice, bread and boiled eggs. Make sure the food is cooked until soft so that the baby does not choke easily. Reaching the age of 9 months, in general, the frequency of baby food can be increased to 3 times a day and at the age of 12 months, the baby can consume food 3 times a day plus snacks / snacks.
What you need to consider is to avoid forcing the baby to eat so that the eating experience does not become traumatic for your baby. If the baby experiences an allergic reaction when starting MPASI, please consult with your doctor further.
