I want to ask if gallstone pain can make the liver swell up. Thank you
Gallbladder is an organ that is under the liver. The gallbladder stores and concentrates the bile produced by the liver. From the liver there is a hepatic duct that bile ducts into the gallbladder, then from the gallbladder there is a cystic duct channel which then joins the hepatic duct portion to form the common bile duct into the duodenum.
Generally gallstones are formed from cholesterol deposits in the gallbladder. The stone can come out of the gallbladder and clog up parts of the duct (channel). Symptoms generally appear when gallstones block the bile ducts. Symptoms that can arise include:
Sudden pain in the upper right abdomen or solar plexus Nausea vomiting Yellow body BAK colored like tea or dark like coca cola CHAPTER pale color Fever Blockage in the bile ducts including due to gallstones can cause enlargement of the liver (hepatomegaly). Other complications that can arise from gallstones are pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder), sepsis. The diagnosis of gallstones can be determined based on clinical symptoms, physical examination, and also investigations in the form of abdominal ultrasonography, CT-scan, or ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography).
Management of gallstones varies depending on their size, location of the blockage, complications that arise as well as the general condition of the patient. Handling generally involves giving (less effective - only for certain types of stones) and also surgery. Thus the explanation from me, hopefully useful.
