How Do You Deal With Iron Deficiency Anemia With Anemia?
Hello doctor, I want to ask. How do you distinguish iron deficiency anemia from other anemia? Is it only looking at the hb lab results if it is low then it is certain that iron deficiency anemia?
Hello Dita, Thank you for the question.
Anemia is a condition of hemoglobin levels that is less than normal. Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells whose job is to bind oxygen. Low hemoglobin levels (anemia) will cause sufferers to experience symptoms of weakness, easy fatigue, pale, dizziness, dizzy, irregular heartbeat, cold hands and feet, headaches, difficulty concentrating, and insomnia.
Basically, anemia is caused by the body experiencing rapid blood loss, the body cannot produce enough red blood cells, or an abnormality that causes the breakdown of healthy red blood cells. Some of the causes of anemia are:
deficiency of vitamin B or folic acid
anemia due to disorders of the spinal cord such as leukemia
Low hemoglobin levels only indicate that the person has anemia. To find out the exact cause of anemia (or type of anemia), further tests are needed besides basic blood tests (which provide information about hemoglobin levels) such as blood smear examination, examination of iron levels, examination of vitamin B12 or folic acid levels, spinal cord examination , and others. From this series of examinations, the doctor will find out the cause of anemia and determine subsequent treatment.
