Mantoux test or also known as tuberculin test is an examination that aims to assess whether someone has been exposed to tuberculosis or not. This examination is often done on infants, toddlers or young children to help diagnose the possibility of tuberculosis.
The reaction between antigens and tuberculosis antibodies from the body will cause induration / small lumps at the injection site that will appear after 48 - 72 hours after the injection. So the results can be known 2-3 days after injection. Negative results if found induration (formed a circle that appears from the surface of the skin) is less than 5mm, and positive if induration is more than 5 mm.
Mantoux test is highly recommended if on the results of a physical examination the doctor finds symptoms that lead to an infection caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. The presence of a lump in the neck can be caused by a variety of possibilities including swollen lymph nodes, thyroid disease, lipomas, cysts, to cancer. Mantoux tests are useful for getting rid of some of these possibilities.
