Hello, I have been suffering from chronic diarrhea for more than 6 months. Every day I waste water, it’s liquid, and I can repeatedly. Already to an internal medicine doctor, I have taken the recommended medicine but it doesn’t heal. There are other ways that can cure my diarrhea?

1 Answer:

Hello Renata,

Diarrhea is a condition of increasing frequency of bowel movements with a more fluid stool consistency. Diarrhea can be accompanied by abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, weakness, fever, and decreased appetite.

Most often diarrhea is caused by food poisoning, consumption of spicy food, infections of the digestive tract, and side effects of drugs. Generally if it is because of this the diarrhea will get better within a few days.

If diarrhea lasts up to 6 months, it is necessary to think about other possibilities that cause chronic diarrhea. Some of the causes of chronic diarrhea include:

Infections of the digestive tract experienced by people with an impaired immune system, for example in immunosuppressant treatment, HIV
Medicines that are consumed such as laxatives
Intolerance to certain foods, such as cow's milk, fructose, and soy protein
Crohn's disease
Irritable bowel syndrome
Ulcerative colitis
Celiac disease
Cystic fibrosis
Complications from surgical removal of the intestine
Chronic inflammation of the pancreas
Colon cancer

If you have taken medication from a doctor but there is no improvement, you should go back to the doctor who treats you so that further evaluation can be done. You can also consult directly with an internal medicine doctor, a gastroenterology consultant so that further tests can be done if necessary with blood tests, stool tests, x-rays, and endoscopy to determine the cause of your chronic diarrhea. Then the doctor will provide a more appropriate treatment for you.

For the time being you can try to do the following tips:

Get enough rest
Drink a lot of water
Eat healthy and nutritious foods that are easy to digest
Avoid spicy food, too fatty, acidic, caffeine, soda
Watch if diarrhea occurs after consumption of certain foods
Wash your hands before and after defecating and before and after eating
