Hello, Theden.

Sinusitis is a condition in which inflammation of the sinus walls occurs. The sinuses themselves are actually small air-filled cavities that are in the bones of the facial area such as the forehead and cheeks. Generally, sinusitis symptoms are accompanied by fever, headache, nasal congestion or discharge, pain in the face, reduced sense of smell, and smelly breath.

The cause of sinusitis is generally due to swelling of the inner wall of the nose, it can be due to an infection by the flu or because of a cold. Other triggering factors besides the presence of viral infections, namely dental infections and smoking habits. Secondary bacterial infections also often occur after viral infections and cause inflammation of the inner wall of the nose.

Treatment of sinusitis depends on the severity of the disease being experienced. If it is still in the mild category, patients generally do not need to see a doctor, because viral infections can heal by themselves as long as the body's immunity is good, maybe pain relievers and decongestants can help relieve symptoms. However, if the symptoms do not improve after about a week of self-medication, or if they get worse, it is better to see a doctor. Doctors can provide antibiotics and steroid sprays / drops. And in more severe cases, it may require operative treatment to improve sinus function.
In cases of chronic sinusitis or those that have lasted a very long time and often recur, treatment aims to reduce inflammation, keep the nasal passages dry, and reduce attacks. Handling that can be done include:
- Saline nasal irrigation, to clean irritating substances and can reduce accumulated fluid.
- warm compress, to reduce pain.
- nasal spray / drop decongestants.

Some cases of sinusitis can lead to complications, so it needs to be watched out for, including:

1. Chronic sinusitis, which lasts more than 3 months
2. Eye socket infection. Generally characterized by eye disorders in the form of swelling of the eyelids, vision problems, difficulty moving the eyeball, etc.
3. Infection of blood vessels around the sinuses.
4.Osteomyelitis, which is an infection of the bones in the face and head area, which can cause swelling of the eyelids, fever, severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, and pain when seeing light
5. Meningitis, infection of the protective membrane of the brain
6. Loss of olfactory power, if inflammation occurs in the nose and swelling of the olfactory nerve.
One symptom of complications is eye complaints, where there are also symptoms of severe headaches, fever, nausea, vomiting, and decreased consciousness. If any of the following complaints occur, immediately consult an ENT doctor for further treatment. The doctor may suggest doing a physical examination such as imaging tests to see the condition of your sinuses as well as other examinations needed.

So much information from us, hopefully it will be useful and get well soon. thanks.
