Hello Elis, thank you for asking at HealthReplies.com.
The thyroid gland referred to by your doctor here is an enlargement of the thyroid gland that is not normal, because the thyroid gland itself is basically an organ that is normally present in our body but is not too large in size so that it can cause lumps that can be seen clearly as in your case.
Enlargement of the thyroid gland itself can be caused by various disorders, can be caused by inflammation, excessive production of thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism), lack of thyroid hormone production (hypothyroidism) or thyroid gland cancer (generally in old age). Therefore, the positive results intended by your doctor are to determine which conditions cause enlargement of your thyroid gland and to determine what further therapy should be done, whether you can use drugs alone or need operative therapy.
For the consequences if left alone long enough all returned to the main cause of enlargement of the gland occurs. If surgery is indeed necessary and you are making a delay, you can consult further with your doctor whether this is possible or not.
I hope this helps.
