Is Himalayan Salt Good For High Blood Pressure?
Hi, I want to ask if Himalayan salt is good for high blood pressure? thanks.
Salt is a mineral that consists of lots of sodium, where salt consists of 98% sodium chloride. Salt is produced by evaporating salt water from the sea or by mining salt from a salt mine in the mountains.
Our body needs sodium to carry out daily functions, both for muscle contraction, nerve function and fluid balance. Sodium is needed by our body, but if too much can cause health problems, including high blood pressure, kidney disorders, or stroke.
Before being packaged and sold, the salt that we usually consume has gone through a variety of processes, such as the use of antipempal so as not to clot, the refining process, and so on. Therefore, many are turning to himalayan salt or at least pink salt as an alternative that is claimed to be healthier than ordinary salt.
Himalayan salt is pink colored salt which is the result of mining from salt mines in Pakistan, close to the Himalayas. The composition is not much different, but the process is less so there are still other minerals in the salt, and the amount of sodium is less than ordinary table salt. The sodium content in 1 gram of table salt is 381 mg while that of the himalayan salt is 369 mg, slightly lower. Himalayan salt also has a higher mineral content of iron, magnesium and potassium than table salt.
Although Himalayan salt is claimed to be healthier, people with high blood pressure still need to limit sodium, and this is no different from sodium from ordinary table salt and Himalayan salt. The AHA (American Heart Association) recommends an adult sodium intake of no more than 2300 mg a day (approximately one teaspoon of table salt) and ideally not more than 1500 mg per day (about half to 3/4 teaspoon of table salt) especially at people suffering from high blood pressure. Most people consume more than this amount.
In conclusion, although the Himalayan salt is healthier than ordinary table salt, still enjoy it to taste. If there are health problems, consult a doctor immediately.
