doctor, the complaint I have is a cough that does not produce phlegm, it feels like itching not in the throat but in the pharynx, the cough I experience is not intense or continuous only occasionally sometimes only happens 2 times a day but when I cough I can’t breathe until it feels like a lack of oxygen or it feels like my chest is empty there is no air coming in, finally when I cough I feel like I’m out of breath, then there is a little blood visible in the tissue, and when I cough sometimes vomit accompanied by mucus and then there is also a little blood. Is it a respiratory disease or just a normal cough? What do I have to do? Do you need a doctor’s diagnosis and treatment or is it just self-medication?

Hi,

First of all, I want to thank you for asking a question on HealthReplies.com. I will try to help answer your question,

Cough is a condition where there is a response from the body, namely the lungs to expel phlegm or germs which can sometimes be accompanied by blood and caused by serious illness. Based on your complaint, you have a cough that has been experienced for a long time which is accompanied by shortness of breath and bloody mucus which can be caused by,

1.     Injuries to the upper respiratory tract due to frequent coughing, coughing that is too tight, consumption of blood-thinning drugs

2.     Chronic bronchitis or inflammation of the lungs which is long term which can be caused by infection or pollution, etc.

3.     Tuberculosis or pulmonary tuberculosis where Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection occurs in the lungs, the symptoms are usually accompanied by weight loss, night sweats and shortness of breath

4.     Bronchiectasis or inflammation of the lungs that recurs causing permanent lung damage

5.     Pulmonary edema or fluid accumulation in the lungs which can be caused by kidney failure or other diseases

6.    Lung cancer

However, of course this is very difficult for us to determine without a direct examination by a doctor. Therefore, you should consult directly with a general practitioner or pulmonary specialist so that the right treatment can be given. The doctor will usually conduct a medical interview, physical examination and additional examinations such as a lung X-ray or complete blood test.

Here are some tips that you can apply to reduce symptoms,

1.     Enough rest

2.     Drink at least 2 liters of water per day

3.     Use a mask if you are still coughing

4.     When coughing try to cover it with your sleeve or tissue

5.     Do not throw tissue or masks carelessly, throw them in the trash

6.     Wash your hands every time you cough

7.     Eat foods that are highly nutritious, especially high in protein

8.     Avoid exposure to smoke either pollution, cigarettes or dust

9.     Avoid smoking, alcohol and caffeine consumption
