Hi Nani, thank you for the question for HealthReplies.com
Rubella or German measles is a disease caused by infection with the Rubella virus. The virus can be spread through droplets from the respiratory fluids (from the nose or throat) of someone infected with rubella when the person coughs, sneezes, or talks. A person can be infected by inhaling the air containing these droplets.
The following are the symptoms of rubella:
Small red rash on the body
enlarged lymph nodes in the head and neck area
flu-like symptoms such as cough or runny nose
pain in the joints
Rubella infection in pregnant women under 20 weeks of age is very dangerous because it can cause disabilities and developmental disorders in the fetus. This condition is called congenital rubella syndrome (CRS-congenital rubella syndrome), which can manifest such as deafness in infants, congenital cataracts, congenital heart disease, impaired brain development, liver and spleen damage, and so on. Infection over 20 weeks has a very small chance of permanent harm to the fetus, but the risk of a baby born with low birth weight remains.
This infection does not require special treatment because it can heal on its own. Treatment is only intended to treat symptoms, such as giving paracetamol to treat fever. Nothing can be done if a pregnant woman has this infection. In countries where abortion is permitted, women who contract rubella infection before 20 weeks of gestation may be offered to terminate the pregnancy because of the risk of developing the fetus. This is not an option in Indonesia because abortion is illegal. The best preventive measure is to vaccinate before pregnancy occurs.
If you experience the symptoms mentioned above, consult your obstetrician immediately.
