Thank you for asking HealthReplies.com.
Pain on one side of the eye can appear with red eyes and visual disturbances (decreased eye vision), or not. These two accompanying symptoms can differentiate the possible diagnosis from the complaints your mother is experiencing. Therefore, it needs to be clarified first, is it apart from pain, does your mother also experience red eyes or visual problems? How long has the complaint been experiencing? Did the complaint appear suddenly, or did it worsen slowly?
Eyes that sometimes close on their own may result from increased sensitivity to light. This, if there is pain in the eye, may be caused by:
Conjunctivitis (inflammation of the lining of the eye, can be caused by infection, irritation, or allergies)
Acute angle closure glaucoma (increased intraocular pressure)
Migraine with aura (primary headache that occurs due to vascular disorders in the brain that triggers inflammation)
Herpes zoster ophthalmicus (reactivation of the Varicella zoster virus in the nerves of the eye)
Keratitis (inflammation of the cornea, most commonly caused by infection)
Cluster headaches (primary headaches that go away and come on over a period of time), etc.
Quite a few possibilities that could trigger your mother's complaint. Therefore, you should ask your mother to see a doctor for a more in-depth evaluation. If it is suspected that the complaint originates from an eye disorder, then your mother will be directed to go to an eye specialist to get the best treatment.
In the meantime, help your mother relieve her complaints through the steps below:
Compress the sore eye with a warm compress and take paracetamol if the pain is quite disturbing
Protect your mother's eyes from exposure to glare, if necessary, give her anti-UV sunglasses as protection, limit going out during the day
Remind your mother to rest her eyes from staring at gadgets that are superfluous
Hope this helps ..
