Proper Wound Care For Swollen And Festering Wounds?
Hello Doctor, it’s been 3 days I have had ulcers in the leg and festering. Early in the treatment, I just washed the wound using cotton and clean water and then applied Betadine. Then on day 4 I used Diprogenta ointment, is it suitable to be applied to ulcers that are festering. What I feel is even more swollen than before. Or is this just a temporary side effect?
Hello Immanuel, thank you for asking.
Fester injuries can be caused by many things. You must explain whether the injury occurred due to an accident or due to skin disease. The presence of pus indicates that there is dead tissue and tissue that is infected with microorganisms. The most common cause of infection is bacteria, although it is not impossible that the infection was also carried by viruses or fungi.
The ointment you mentioned contains gentamicin antibiotics and anti-inflammation betamethasone. The drug should only be purchased by prescription from a doctor. Improper use can lead to drug-resistant bacteria. Note whether the ointment is in good condition and does not expire. Avoid cleaning the wound with cotton, because cotton fibers can stick to the wound. Use clean gauze moistened with boiled water. Clean the wound 2-3 times a day. Apply antiseptic solution to the wound.
You should also consult with a doctor directly. The doctor may need to remove dead tissue and clean the pus completely. If the infection looks quite extensive and severe, then there is a possibility the doctor will give you medicine. Therefore, it is better if you go to the doctor first, if the wound does not heal.
That is my explanation. May be useful. Regards.
