Rabies Vaccine After 25 Days Of Being Bitten By An Animal?
Congratulations, doctor, r nI want to ask, if a person has been bitten by an animal suspected of having rabies and it has been 25 days since being bitten, but has not been given the rabies vaccine. Only the tetanus vaccine and antibiotics are given. R n r nCan you still get the rabies vaccine? Because if you look at the scar, it’s still swollen and suppurating. R nTrimaksh

Rabies is an infectious disease of the central nervous system caused by the rabies virus which is transmitted through the bite of rabies-carrying animals such as dogs, cats and monkeys. The incubation period is 10-12 days after being bitten, after which the patient will show the initial symptoms of rabies in the form of fever, weakness, tingling and pain in the wound and anxiety. Rabies prevention is to provide anti-rabies vaccine. The management of someone who is bitten by a dog or cat or monkey is as follows:
1. Wash the bite area with running water and soap or detergent for 15 minutes.
2. Clean the bite wound with providon iodine and 70% alcohol.
3. Immediately go to a health facility.
4. Capture and observe biting animals for 14 days.
In a health facility, the doctor will assess the condition of the wound, if the wound is in a place where there are many nerve vessels (shoulder up, fingers and toes) or the wound is large and deep or there is more than one wound, then the patient is given Anti Vaccine. Rabies (VAR) with Anti Rabies Serum (SAR). Apart from the types of wounds mentioned above, patients are only given VAR if the biting animal cannot be observed or dies. However, if the biting animal is the vaccinated pet and when it is observed for 14 weeks the animal is fine, then VAR administration is not necessary.
For wounds that have been 25 days old but are still swollen and accompanied by pus, a secondary infection should be suspected. I suggest that the patient should be brought to the doctor so that the doctor can check the condition of the wound as well as clean and treat it.
So, thank you.
