Regarding Blood Classification?
why do scientists or doctors in hospitals refer to the blood type with the letter O A B why not just another letter?
p dir = "ltr"> Hi, thank you for asking at HealthReplies.com
One way to group blood groups is by using the ABO system. This classification is based on the discovery of A and B antigens on the surface of red blood cells.
In blood type A, there is antigen A on the surface of red blood cells and the body has antibody B. Blood type B, there is antigen B on the surface of red blood cells and in the body has antibody A. In blood type AB, there are antigens A and B on the surface red blood cells, but do not have antibodies. meanwhile, blood type O does not have antigens on the surface of red blood cells but has antibodies A and B.
This blood classification system is very useful for the benefit of transfusion. In people with blood type AB, can receive blood donors from any blood type, but can only donate to blood type AB only. Meanwhile, blood type O can only accept blood donations from blood type O, but can give blood donations to any blood type.
Thus, hopefully useful.
