Hello, I am 18 years old and I want to take part in martial arts such as pencak silat but I suffer from scoliosis, is it OK or not?

Scoliosis is an abnormally curved condition of the spine. Symptoms experienced by sufferers depend on the severity of the curvature of the spine.


Scoliosis sufferers are not recommended to do sports that involve physical contact such as self-defense sports because these sports can cause injury to the spine and worsen the condition of scoliosis. In addition, sports that involve excessive backbone movements such as some yoga positions that bend your back or gymnastics are also not recommended. Patients are also not recommended to lift heavy loads, especially on one side of the body.


Regarding physical activity that you can do, the best step you can take is to consult with a medical rehabilitation specialist first.
