Should Immunization Be Given To Babies With Spina Bifida?
Hello doctor … I am the mother of a baby with spina bifida. My daughter is only 11 days old. What I want to ask is if my daughter should still be immunized even though she has spina bifida. Please explain so that we do not hesitate in giving immunizations for our daughters
Hi Umminya Tuffah,
Spina bifida is a condition in which birth defects occur with the formation of gaps or defects in the baby's spine and spinal cord. Spina bifida consists of several levels, ranging from mild and does not cause any symptoms, to severe.
In severe spina bifida conditions, babies will be more susceptible to infection. Therefore, immunization will still be needed just like any other normal baby.
Please discuss this with your pediatrician, to get a more complete explanation.
It should also be noted that people with spina bifida often experience allergic disorders with natural latex. Therefore, be more careful with the use of materials that may contain this latex. Please read: Living with Spina bifida
That's the explanation, hope it helps.
