Should Pregnant Women Not Eat Smoked Fish?

I’m pregnant tm2. Want to ask if it’s true that pregnant women shouldn’t eat smoked fish? Yesterday I got a gift from my friend smoked fish and I immediately put it in the refrigerator. I haven’t cooked it for 3 days because I read an article on the internet that pregnant women should not eat smoked fish. Is it really like that? What if I have cooked the smoked fish (for example, I’m fried) is it still not allowed? Thanks.

Hi Fiitri,

Pregnant women should be more careful in daily food consumption. In general, pregnant women are not advised to consume raw or undercooked meat or fish. Seafood including smoked fish is not recommended for pregnant women because of the risk of containing listeria bacteria.

If you want to consume fish while pregnant, make sure the fish is processed until it is fully cooked for example fried, and it is better to choose smaller fish to minimize the risk of mercury exposure to larger fish.

In addition to raw or undercooked meat and fish, undercooked eggs, pasteurized milk, baked foods, alcoholic drinks, caffeinated drinks, and cigarette smoke should also be avoided during pregnancy.

Hope it helps you,

Thank you
