Hello doctor. I’m Eva. I want to ask, do I have to be immunized or take medicine / immunization to prevent elephantiasis ?. I am 19 years old. Thank you
Hello Eva, thank you for the question to HealthReplies.com
Elephant foot disease or also called filariasis is a disease caused by a parasitic infection of Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, or Brugia timori. These parasites can be transmitted through mosquito bites.
Until now there is no specific vaccine / immunization that can prevent this disease. However, because this disease is a disease transmitted by mosquitoes, the best prevention is to avoid mosquito bites. Mosquitoes that carry parasites that cause filariasis usually bite in the afternoon until early morning. If you live in an endemic area of filariasis, you will be advised to prevent mosquito bites, for example by:
Sleep with a mosquito net
Using long sleeves and long pants
Using anti-mosquito drugs on skin that is not covered by clothes
In the endemic areas of Filariasis, the Indonesian government has also implemented a program to eradicate Filariasis by Provision of Preventive Mass Medicines (POMP). Filariasis POMP is done by administering a single dose of Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and Albendazol which is given once a year and repeated once every year for five years in endemic areas of filariasis. If you live in a Filariasis endemic area, you can ask directly at health centers in your area such as at the health center to find out when the drug administration is carried out.
Following are the endemic areas of filariasis in Indonesia:
