Hello Doctor, I’m a 16 year old girl. I had GERD and had previously taken Antacids Doen and Omeprazole. However, in the last 1 month, I have never used it again because it never gets better. I feel disturbed by the burping that doesn’t stop after eating. Even though I have avoided carbonated foods, nuts, and my friends – I have made it a habit to chew food longer too. How to handle it? And do I have to keep taking the same or different drugs?

Hello, Monica

Thank you for your question for

Sorry for the long wait :)

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition characterized by heartburn or a burning sensation due to increased stomach acid. This occurs because the circumference of the lower esophageal muscle is not functioning properly. The loop of the muscles in the lower part of the esophagus relaxes, so that it cannot close completely. GERD is influenced by several factors, including heredity, stress, excess weight, consumption of certain drugs, and consumption of foods with high fat content. Symptoms that can arise include heartburn, a burning feeling in the chest, mouth and throat that feels bad. The diagnosis of GERD is confirmed by history, physical examination, and endoscopic investigation. Several things can be done to reduce complaints, including avoiding consumption of foods or drinks that stimulate stomach acid, such as spicy, acidic, high-fat foods, and coffee, avoiding stress, avoiding sleeping late at night and maintaining ideal body weight. Medicines that you can take, such as omeprazole to reduce stomach acid production and domperidone to suppress stomach acid. We recommend that you consult directly with your doctor so that anamnesis, physical examination, laboratory examination and supporting examinations can be carried out, and you can get appropriate treatment.

Some tips you can do:

1. Eat foods with balanced nutrition, multiply vegetables and fruit.

2. Avoid consuming foods or drinks that can stimulate stomach acid, such as spicy, acidic, high fat content and coffee.

3. Manage stress well

4. Exercise regularly, at least for 30 minutes, 4-5 times a week

5. Get enough sleep, for 7-8 hours

Thus, hopefully this is useful.
