Doc, can a parent with Down syndrome give birth to a normal child?

1 Answer:

Hello, thank you for the question to HealthReplies.com

Basically people with Down syndrome have lower fertility than people without Down syndrome. This is especially true for men with Down syndrome. Women with Down syndrome may still be able to get pregnant and have children, but most (almost all) men with Down syndrome can not have children. Women with Down syndrome have a higher risk of having children with Down syndrome as well (30-50%). Because only the risk is increased, it is not impossible to have normal children.

Couples with Down syndrome should always consult with an obstetrician before planning a pregnancy.

So much information from me, hopefully enough answer
