Anencephaly is a congenital disorder of the central nervous system in which the brain and skull that cover it fail to develop. This condition occurs when the neural tube fails to close in the 3rd to 4th week of fetal development, which can cause the fetus to die.
Anencephalus can be caused by various factors, including one of the most important is folic acid deficiency. In addition, several other factors, such as IIDM (pregestational insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus), maternal hyperthermia (for example due to frequent exposure to hot environments or experiencing fever), genetic disorders, and damage to the amniotic membrane are also strongly suspected to have contributed to this condition.
