Good night! should I consume the folic acid?

1 Answer:

Hi Rissya,

Thank you for asking HealthReplies.com.

Anencephaly is a congenital disorder of the central nervous system in which the brain and skull that cover it fail to develop. This condition occurs when the neural tube fails to close in the 3rd to 4th week of fetal development, which can cause the fetus to die.

Anencephalus can be caused by various factors, including one of the most important is folic acid deficiency. In addition, several other factors, such as IIDM (pregestational insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus), maternal hyperthermia (for example due to frequent exposure to hot environments or experiencing fever), genetic disorders, and damage to the amniotic membrane are also strongly suspected to have contributed to this condition.

With your previous pregnancy history, your doctor needs to give you folic acid supplements to help prevent the risk of recurring congenital abnormalities in the fetus in your next pregnancy. Based on various studies, the consumption of sufficient folic acid is very useful in reducing the risk of the fetus experiencing anencephaly or other birth defects, for example spina bifida. In addition, consumption of folic acid is also useful for preventing anemia during pregnancy, maintaining the health of the mother and fetus, and preventing the formation of cancer cells (although this still needs to be proven again through further research).

Generally healthy women need folic acid intake in the range of 400 to 800 micrograms per day. However, if you have a history of being pregnant with an anencephalic fetus, your folic acid needs are likely to be much higher, even up to 10 times that of other healthy women.

However, the exact dose of folic acid you need, and how long the duration of folic acid consumption you should consume can certainly vary depending on many factors, such as your posture, history of illness, and so on. For that, you should consult directly with your gynecologist regarding this.

Apart from folic acid supplements, it is highly recommended that you also meet your folic acid needs through intake of healthy and nutritious foods. Some examples of foods that contain lots of folic acid include broccoli, bananas, avocados, flour, nuts, seeds, green leafy vegetables, and so on.

Hope it helps ..
