The Accuracy Of The Glucose Check Tool In Strips?
Doctor, is the expired glucosa test strip still accurate?
Hello Amanda, thank you for the question to HealthReplies.com
Glucose testing tools in the form of strips can detect glucose by using an enzyme in the strip called glucose oxidase. Glucose oxidase, when met with glucose in the blood will produce another compound called gluconic acid and this gluconic acid compound will deliver an electrical signal to the glucometer (a strip reader). This electrical signal will be translated by a glucometer so that it can finally be read in the form of numbers that describe glucose levels in the blood.
The enzyme in this glucose check strip has an expiration period. When the glucose check strip has expired, this enzyme is most likely not working properly so the results of blood glucose readings on the glucometer will not be accurate. Some other things that cause glucose readings on the glucometer are inaccurate include:
poor quality glucose strips
how to store glucose strips that are not good
Storage strips at extreme temperatures and high humidity
Use of different strips and glucometers brands
the amount of blood that is placed on the strips is lacking
the strip is not properly inserted into the glucometer
If the glucose check strip has expired, it should not be used anymore because it is most likely already inaccurate. Make sure you buy a strip that has the same brand as a glucometer and store the strip properly according to the rules written on the packaging.
So much information from me, hopefully enough answer
