1 Answer:

Hi Ana,

Diabetes insipidus is a type of diabetes but is more rare than diabetes mellitus, where diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by an increase in blood sugar levels that exceeds normal while diabetes insipidus is not associated with blood sugar levels. Diabetes insipidus itself is divided into 2 types, namely central or cranial diabetes insipidus caused by the body not having enough antidyretic hormones from the hypothalamus and nephrogenic diabetes insipidus where the body has enough diuretic hormones to regulate urine production but the kidneys are unable to respond. Symptoms that can arise are frequent urination, easy thirst and often wake up to urinate at night.

The cause of cranial diabetes insipidus itself is due to tumors in the brain, due to brain surgery, due to severe head injuries and other unknown causes, whereas nephrogenic diabetes insipidus is caused by disorders from birth or obtained after birth due to drug side effects one of them. Both cranial diabetes insipidus and nephrogenic diabetes insipidus can occur in men and women where there is no gender-related difference in the prevalence of diabetes insipidus.

To diagnose diabetes insipidus several tests can be carried out such as water deprivation tests, blood tests, urine tests, antidiuretic hormone tests, or scanning with MRI if needed. Handling itself depends on the type of diabetes insipidus experienced and its causes, self-treatment aims to overcome the symptoms that arise, overcome the causes of diabetes insipidus and reduce the amount of urine out and avoid the occurrence of fluid deficiency or dehydration.
