Good morning. My baby is 3 months old. I gave ASIP for one serving of 120 ml and it ran out immediately. But my baby only drink 6-7 times a day. Even then, the gift is 3-5 hours before the baby wants to breastfeed again. Is this condition normal and do I have to reduce the portion of breastfeeding for one drink?

Hi Iis,

Thank you for asking HealthReplies.com.

Breastfeeding a baby with breast milk (breast milk) directly from the breast has many advantages, including that you can more easily meet the needs of your baby's milk without worrying about excess or deficiency. However, there are times when mothers have problems in breastfeeding their babies directly, for example due to work, sore nipples, infections around the breasts, inverted nipples, tongue ties, lip ties, nipple confusion, and so on. As a result, as an alternative, expressed breast milk can be given.

At the age of 3 months, the baby's milk needs can reach 80 to 150 ml at a time depending on the condition of each baby. The consumption of breast milk can be done every 2 to 4 hours whenever the baby needs it. Therefore, if judging at a glance from the information you convey, your baby's condition is actually still quite normal.

You can be more objective in observing the adequacy of the expressed breast milk you give, namely by assessing its growth and development. Babies who get enough breast milk will grow according to their age. At 3 months of age, a baby normally weighs 5.6 to 7.2 in boys and 5.2 to 6.6 in girls. If your baby's weight is still in the normal range, then there's nothing to worry about.

You need to reduce the portion of expressed breast milk for your baby per drink if your baby seems to be spitting up a lot or his stomach is bloated after feeding. This can also be overcome by burping the baby after feeding, elevating the head and chest position while feeding, and not breastfeeding the baby while lying down. But if your baby does not show the signs above, then it means that your baby's condition is quite good.

If you face any problems related to exclusive breastfeeding, don't hesitate to consult directly with a lactation consultant doctor at the nearest health facility.
