, I want to ask. Antibiotics must be finished. I have an ear infection. Yesterday I was just a general practitioner and given antibiotics, then the next day I went to the ENT doctor and then given antibiotics too. Should I finish the antibiotics the first doctor gave me? Or is it okay to take another antibiotic right away? Thank you for your answer.

Hi Chafr,

Thank you for asking HealthReplies.com.

Ear infections can occur confined to the external ear only (otitis external) or also to the middle part (otitis media). Depending on the location and severity, this infection can cause symptoms that vary, often in the form of pain in the ear, swelling, decreased hearing function, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), to discharge abnormal secretions from the ear. In more severe conditions, ear infections can also make sufferers experience fever, chills, pain and stiff jaw, and various other complaints. Frequently, this infection occurs due to moist ear conditions and habit of prying up excessive ears. Or, infection can also occur due to the spread of infection from the respiratory tract.

Overcoming ear infections can be done in various ways, one of them by giving antibiotics. With antibiotics, bacteria, which most often cause infections in the ear, can be eradicated well so that complaints will improve. The consumption of these antibiotics needs to be done regularly, according to the time period recommended by the doctor to maintain the effectiveness of the drug's work, while minimizing the risk of bacterial resistance.

Therefore, if you have already been treated for your complaint and given treatment, including antibiotics, then when you feel the complaint has not improved and checked your complaint to another doctor, you should bring along the treatment that you get from your doctor before. That way, doctors can evaluate, is there any treatment that needs to be continued, stopped, added, replaced, or maybe reduced.

In connection with your question, without conducting a direct physical examination, and without knowing the type of antibiotic that your doctor prescribes, we are not authorized to assess, whether the right steps you should take, whether to continue taking the drug you got before, or switch to a new drug . It is better if you consult directly with the ENT specialist who is examining you, as well as by bringing the medicine that the doctor previously prescribed to you. That way, the doctor can also tell you the best steps you need to take.

In the meantime, for ear infections to improve, here are our suggestions:

Keep your ears clean and dry. Don't dive in or swim. Avoid prying your ears with any device. Avoid using any ear drops without doctor's advice. Don't put anything in the ear (including water or cotton bud).
