Hi Prajma,

Thank you for asking HealthReplies.com.

Tetanus is an infection caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. These bacteria can be found in soil, dust, and animal feces. Usually, these bacteria enter the body through deep, closed wounds, and do not get good care. Not always, this wound will appear festering from the outside. Some types of wounds that are vulnerable to the entry of bacteria that cause tetanus are puncture wounds, gunshot wounds, burns, dislodged baby's umbilical cord, tooth decay with holes, animal bites, and so on.

Clinically, the symptoms of tetanus will appear about 7 to 10 days after bacteria enter the body. These symptoms can include muscle stiffness (especially jaw muscles, neck, abdomen, back, and then spread throughout the body accompanied by pain), difficulty swallowing, fever, excessive sweating, palpitations, and so on. If you do not get the right treatment, tetanus can cause sufferers to have difficulty breathing, and can even lead to death. Therefore, prevention is certainly much better.

Efforts to prevent tetanus can be done in various ways, including:

Tetanus vaccine administration
Tetanus vaccine is generally given in 5 stages, namely when children are 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 18 months, and 4 to 6 years. After the child is 7 years old, a repeat vaccine test can be given once every 10 years. If you have a wound, keep it clean, don't leave it damp, or dirty. Always use good footwear when outdoors activities. Maintain good bodily hygiene, observe, perhaps there are wounds that you are not aware of. For more details, please consult directly with the doctor or the nearest neurologist.

I hope this helps.
