Good morning doctor, I want to ask … My dad had a tracheostomy about 9 months ago due to a hemmorhagic stroke, now it is stable and is being treated at home. Want to ask, the pipe for breathing via the trachea has been removed since 8 months ago, but until now the wound in his neck is still not healed … Is it really so healing huh? The problem then was closing, but Krna still coughed it open again … Please explain, thank you 🙏

Hi Hendry,

Thank you for the question.

Tracheostomy is a procedure to insert a tube in the trachea (respiratory tract) to help the process of breathing. Tracheostomy can be permanent or temporary, depending on the person's respiratory status. If a person can breathe spontaneously without needing help, a tracheostomy tube can be opened. Tracheostomy holes in the neck after the hose is opened will heal by itself in a matter of a few weeks, and can give a small scar on the neck.

The process of healing a tracheostomy wound usually takes place in a matter of weeks, and not until months like what you say. The wound can heal, but the wound still gives a mark on the neck, which can be permanent. Wounds that have not healed are marked by wounds that are still wet, reddish, the appearance of pus, and wounds appear open, which requires re-evaluation by the doctor and closure of the wound by stitches if needed. The process of healing the wound that is not optimal can be influenced by the nutritional status of the person, treatment of the wound that is not good, as well as activities in the neck that interfere with wound healing such as coughing hard. Therefore, you should visit a doctor to evaluate the wound.

Hopefully this information can help.

Regards.
