Hello, can the level 3 burn treatment be done using the 3D printing method? if possible, how can I not attack the immune system. Thank you

1 Answer:

Hello Nur Kholis.

The last decade is indeed the development of the use of 3D printing for medical purposes, is being done a lot. The use of these techniques is mainly for the manufacture of prostheses or transplanted organs such as the heart. In recent years, researchers in several developed countries such as Canada and the United States, developed 3D printing as a treatment for burns. The work mechanism of the printer is almost the same as 3D printing in general. The difference is the material used to produce the skin layer.

3D printing for burns uses material in the form of stromal mesenchymal cells. Mesenchymal cells are stem cells that can differentiate into various tissues, depending on the cell program. The printer will form a thin layer of mesenchymal cells in the skin that is burned. The mesenchymal cell layer can be applied layer by layer until the desired thickness is reached. Mesenchymal cells will trigger the regeneration of new skin cells.

To our knowledge, 3D printing for burns is still in the development stage. It will take several more years before the device is ready for distribution. Keep in mind, too, that management with a printer, can only be carried out for burns that are not too broad and deep. 3rd or 4th degree burns affect the entire thickness of the skin, so very little healthy skin is left. In such conditions, the mesenchymal cell layer may not be able to trigger the growth of new skin cells, because not enough healthy skin cells can be stimulated. In such cases, the possibility of management still must refer to the autologous skin graft.

Hopefully this explanation is useful. Regards.
