What Are The Late Side Effects Of Using Regular 5-day Steroid Medication?
Night. I experience menstrual delays after taking dexharsan for 5 days routine 3×1 for the treatment of hordeolum. Is the delay in menstruation related to the side effects of dexharsan? thanks.
Hello Vinna Dwi Septiani Bahtiar,
Dexharsen is a dexamethasone drug with a general preparation of 0.5 mg. Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid class of drugs that has anti-inflammatory effects. This drug is widely used in the management of various diseases, such as asthma, allergies, autoimmune diseases, steroid insufficiency therapy, and others according to the dosage and duration of consumption depending on the patient's disease.
The use of this drug in the short term, is generally relatively safe. Side effects can arise from the use of any drug, usually varies in each person and does not always appear. The most common side effects of using dexamethasone are:
Heartburn Increased appetite Sleep disorders Muscle feels weak Wounds are more difficult to heal Swelling of the feet due to fluid retention Cushing syndrome Increased blood sugar levels Usually these side effects have been predicted by the doctor and as much as possible minimum in nature, for example the drug is recommended to be taken after eating so does not cause heartburn or nausea. Giving dexamethasone in certain cases also requires close clinical supervision. Severe side effects that can arise such as gastrointestinal bleeding, increased risk of infection, mood changes, osteoporosis, faster cataract formation, increased eye pressure. Dexamethasone will still be given if the benefits provided are far greater than the potential side effects.
It is best not to stop using corticosteroids suddenly if you have previously taken this drug for a long period of time (> 2 weeks). Discontinuation needs to be gradual and adjust the dose by a doctor. Use of dexamethasone can cause late menstruation and irregular menstrual cycles. However, these side effects generally occur in the long-term use of dexamethasone or on the use of injection preparations. Corticosteroid side effects to menstruation are usually reversible, which means it will return to normal when treatment has finished.
Apart from the side effects of the drug dexamethasone, menstrual delays can also be caused by other factors such as pregnancy, drastic weight changes, certain diseases such as PCOS, thyroid disorders, to stress. Thus the explanation from me, hopefully useful.
