What Are The Normal Results Of The Widal Test?
Doctor Alodokter What is the normal Negative Doctors Widal Test? Please enlighten me, Doctor?
Hello Fakhrurozi, Thank you for the question.
Widal test is a serological examination that aims to detect the presence of antibodies (immune substances) that are formed due to infection by Salmonella bacteria such as typhus. Typhus is a digestive tract infection caused by Salmonella typhii bacteria that is transmitted through contaminated food and drink. This infection causes sufferers to experience symptoms such as fever, diarrhea / constipation, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, headaches, muscle aches, and weakness. Widal test is one of the blood tests that is still widely used in various regions in Indonesia. In addition to the Widal test, there is also another blood test used to detect typhus, the Tubex test. The Tubex test is a more accurate but more expensive blood test. Although the Widal test is more widely used, the results of this examination must be interpreted with caution, especially in endemic areas such as Indonesia. Every person on average has been exposed to this bacterium and Widal test results can show positive results, however, not necessarily the person is infected with typhus or in other words, this positive result is a false positive result. Therefore, the results of this examination must be related to the symptoms of the patient, the doctor's physical examination, and other supporting examinations. In general, the Widal test is said to be positive if the results of the titer examination of O antigens or H antigens show the number 1: 160. However, the results of a single blood test are generally less significant because these positive results can also be caused by other infections. Furthermore, a single positive examination result may be a false positive result, as mentioned above. The results of this examination can show the diagnosis of typhus with certainty if found a rise in titre as much as four times during sufferers of this disease (for example from 1:40 to 1: 640).
Interpreting the results of the Widal examination is not easy. Therefore, it is recommended that you always discuss the results of your blood test with a doctor who recommends the examination so that the doctor can make a diagnosis conclusion and provide treatment that is appropriate for your condition.
I hope this helps.
